Hampden has been home to more than Scottish Cup Glory. Many other cups have been contested and won at the famous arena. From commemorative competitions to European finals, hundreds of thousands have flocked to Hampden to witness Cup Glory.
To mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth a tournament was organised for the elite of British football. Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen, and Hibs represented Scotland, while Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle, and Tottenham Hotspur were the English clubs. All the matches were played in Glasgow, with Rangers and Celtic. The final was played at Hampden between Celtic and Hibernian, with Celtic winning 2-0.
A crowd of 127,621 saw what many described as the greatest match in Hampden's long history. Madrid had won all the previous finals but Eintracht had beaten Rangers 12-4 on aggregate in the semi finals. The Spaniards led 3-1at half time and went 4-1 up when Puskas scored a penalty. He later went on to score four goals and Real won the match 7-3.
Celtic were leading the tie 1-0 from the Elland Road match but this match between the champions of Scotland and England drew a crowd of 136,505, a record for any European competition. Leeds equalised through Bremner, but goals from John Hughes and Bobby Murdoch won the tie for Celtic. Celtic went on to lose the final in Milan to the Dutch side Feyenoord in extra time.
Cup Tournaments have always produced shocks, but the Final between Celtic and Partick Thistle was one of the most memorable. Goals from Rae, Lawrie, McQuade and Bone gave Partick an amazing 4 – 0 lead at half time. A Kenny Dalglish goal in the second half was all Celtic could manage and Thistle ran out winners to confound all pre match predictions.
1986 was the centenary of the Scottish Junior Football Association and the 100th Junior Cup Final. Pollok from Glasgow and Auchinleck from Ayrshire were two of the biggest names in Junior football. Goals from Tom MacDonald (2) and Jim O'Donnell give Talbot victory by 3-2, although Pollok had been leading by 2-0. This was the last Junior Cup Final to be held at Hampden.
The game was won by a wonder goal from Real Madrid's Zinedine Zidane. With the score tied at 1-1 Zidane hit a spectacular volley with his left foot high into the net beyond the Bayer goalkeeper.
